Oculus Rift Core 2.0 Platform Leaves Beta

Oculus has started its keynote address for Oculus Connect 5 (OC5) all guns blazing, announcing the long awaited Oculus Quest standalone headset. But that’s not to say its forgetting old favourite Oculus Rift, revealing that its software platform Core 2.0 is exiting beta today.

Oculus Home

What that means is new updates for both Home and Dash, with Home getting even more customisation options to personalise your own digital pad. There are now hundreds of themed items and environments including a new tropical modern theme and summer decorations. Users can also import their own 3D models and objects to decorate their space.

Under the hood performance has also improved providing new dynamic lighting and physically-based rendering. Oculus has reworked Home to ensure these new updates will still work on minimum spec PC’s.

Developers can also get in on the action for Oculus Home, so later this year they’ll be able to create Custom Developer Items, like animated objects, sculptures, trophies, and avatar clothing for all your favourite videogames. Testing has already begun with achievement objects able to be earnt in titles like Arizona Sunshine, Brass Tactics, Echo VR, Lone Echo, Job Simulator, Moss, OrbusVR, and SUPERHOT VR.

Home will also be getting more social where users can host up to eight friends simultaneously for hangouts and Avatars will be getting more expressive later this year which will feature simulated eye and mouth movement and subtle micro-expressions.

As for Dash, its been redesigned for better ergonomics, as well as offering at a glance clock, sound adjustment, and checking your controller battery all directly on the belt.

Core 2.0 is rolling out to the Public Test Channel today and to the Oculus Rift community in early October. For further updates keep reading VRFocus.
