One of the hotly anticipated virtual reality (VR) titles coming to PlayStation VR this Fall in Sony Japan Studio’s cute platformer Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. Due to arrive in a couple of weeks, the videogame has now gone gold and the group behind its development ASOBI! Team have now released a behind-the-scenes video to discuss the title in greater detail.
In the video Sony Japan Studio’s Creative Director and Producer Nicolas Doucet interviews Lead Designer Gento Morita and Art Director Sebastian Brueckner, discussing Astro Bot: Rescue Mission’s level design and what makes it different from classic ‘pancake’ platformers.
“We talk about how we created 360 gameplay in VR while keeping the experience comfortable, and how moving your body gives you a unique perspective, letting you interact with the scenery and your location more fully,” Doucet explains on PlayStation Blog.
Created by the team behind The Playroom VR, the studio has fleshed out an entire adventure for the pint-sized robot. Initially revealed in May, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission features 26 levels across five different worlds ranging from city, sky, water and fire stages. Each has its own puzzles to solve, plenty of collectibles to find and boss battles to face at the end. Fully controlled using the DualShock 4 gamepad, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission furthers the immersion by putting the controller in the videogame, using it to not only collect Astro Bots but help the main character as well.
Astro Bot: Rescue Mission is due for launch exclusively for PlayStation VR on 2nd October 2018. Check out VRFocus’ hands-on video from the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) to see what we thought. Or if you happen to be in the UK this week – or live here, near Birmingham – then you can always pop down to EGX 2018 where the videogame will be on display.
