Designing and creating in 3D can be somewhat tricky. For many areas, specialist knowledge is needed, along with the skills to use 3D computer-aided design apps or code from scratch. Torch 3D Inc are trying to open up the sector by offering a mobile augmented reality (AR) prototyping and design app that lets users build interactive 3D prototypes quickly and easily.
Users of the new Torch AR app will be able to built interactive prototypes, collaborate on projects in real-time and work with existing 3D and 2D files, tools or workflows all using the same mobile device where the finished apps will run.
“Today is a milestone for Torch,” said Paul Reynolds, Torch CEO and co-founder. “This release sets a new high bar for 3D design tools while also dramatically lowering barriers to entry to the 3D world, and Natasha is going to be an asset to our team, adding value already with her strong industry perspective. It’s estimated there will be a billion 3D-capable mobile devices by the end of this year, and there are close to 5 million mobile app designers who already know how to design for them. With Torch, designers can finally tap the power of 3D to bring all their existing skills to this new — and sometimes intimidating — world.”
Users of the Torch AR app will be able to use AR features such as image detection, along with other existing mobile ecosystem features such as payment, voice input, social media sharing and GPS.
“Until now, designers faced a a number of challenges when trying to access good 3D assets, from finding content to just getting those models to work in their design tools,” said Alban Denoyel, CEO and co-founder of Sketchfab, the largest platform to publish and find 3D models online. With Torch, you can just search, then drag and drop Sketchfab models into a scene and start prototyping. Torch’s focus on making 3D prototyping easy is a perfect complement to Sketchfab’s focus on providing diverse and qualitative 3D assets.”
