The United Kingdom has long considered to be punching above its weight class in terms of technology and innovation for one small, rainy island. In order to sustain this reputation as immersive technology moved towards the mainstream, Innovate UK is launching the next phase of its Audience of the Future Challenge, which will see the launch of a new research and development fund.
The Production Innovation for Immersive Content fun will make up to £8 million (GBP) available to business-led R&D projects that allow for immersive content such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to be created in new ways.
The belief is that providing new ways for AR and VR content to be made, or streamlining the creation process will benefit UK businesses and help drive the evolution of the UK into a creative hub.
The competition is open to all UK creative industries and organisations which are working with immersive technologies. Single company projects are eligible for up to £250,000, while collaborative projects can receive up to £1m.
All submitted proposals must include at least on participants who is a content creator and need to be aimed towards delivering tools, products or services for creating and delivering immersive content, including VR, AR and mixed reality (MR).
A series of events are planned across the UK through the month of October to give people a chance to learn more about the competition, ask questions and learn about the funding on offer. Entry is free, but demand for these sessions is expected to be high, so registration is required. Further information can be found on the Immerse UK website.
The competition will be made live on Monday 1st October, 2018 and resources, including information on making an application, will be available from that date.
