VR Puzzle Title I Expect You To Die Passes $3 Million Milestone

Back in 2016 developer Schell Games released a virtual reality (VR) puzzle title called I Expect You To Die. The title was a success, gaining critical praise as well as an enthusiastic response from players. The developer has now revealed that I Expect You To Die has surpassed $3 million (USD) in earned revenue.

I Expect You To Die is a hybrid of puzzle game and virtual escape room where players take the role of a secret agent who has to survive deadly traps and tricks thought up by evil mastermind Dr Zor. Players need to complete missions by solving problems or find themselves subject to an untimely demise.

As the title would suggest, much inspiration has been taken from the spy movie genre, complete with the over-the-top themes, gadgets and situations that you might expect. As VRFocus said in its preview: “The last thing I Expect You to Die will do is take itself seriously, and you’ll need to adjust your thinking as such to solve some puzzles. The best solutions will often involve the use of positional tracking; physically ducking to avoid rotating lasers is a genuine thrill that puts you right there in the moment in a way that only high-end VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) can.”

It was in August 2017 that Schell Games announced that the title had raked in $1 million n revenue, and since then the development team have continued to support the title, adding new content such as the ‘First Class’ update and ports to other platforms.

“The team put a lot of heart and hard work into I Expect You To Die and the success we’ve achieved definitely shows our passion for this project,” said Jesse Schell, CEO of Schell Games. “With support from fans, gamers, and techies who have played I Expect You to Die, we’ve proved that virtual reality can become a mainstream platform and its future is looking incredibly bright.”
