A number of schools, universities and educational institutions have experimented with virtual reality (VR) as a means to enhance and improve the educational experience for students. Now technology company Intel is taking VR education on the road with its Tech Learning Lab.
The Tech Learning Lab is a custom-built mobile container truck which has been outfitted with VR devices including Oculus Rift and HTC Vive as well as powerful Intel-powered education PCs and smart whiteboards.
The purpose of the Tech Learning Lab is to provide hands-on educational experiences designed to improve learning outcomes and let education professionals utilise these cutting-edge learning tools. Through VR, and other technological tools it is hoped that students will be able to develop skills in areas such as problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and collaboration.
Intel will host a pop-up event which will involve immersive programming for both students and educators. The hands-on sessions during this even will feature the following:
- Design Thinking: Collaborative team exercises to help students think like engineers
- Coding with Drones: Guiding students through basic coding principles to teach students how to write code and program a drone to navigate an obstacle course.
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence: An overview of AI through hands-on activities that lets students design virtual creations.
There will also be virtual lessons provided by the Tech Learning Lab truck, which will include:
- Robotics lab: Students will create and test virtual robots with a high degree of realism
- Chemistry lab: Brings students to a virtual game show where they practice lab skills
- Dissection Lab: A humane form of a dissection lesson which teaches principles of anatomy and life sciences
- Arts Lab: Painting and creating in three dimensions
- Space Lesson: Students explore outer space and learn about the Milky Way Galaxy, black holes and comets.
