If there’s one thing videogames like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Moss prove it’s that virtual reality (VR) content doesn’t necessarily have to be first-person, and that having a third-person viewpoint can still make for a excellent experience. Moss received a resounding thumbs up from press and gamers alike when it launched for PlayStation VR earlier this year – then coming to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive – and so this week saw developer Polyarc take to Reddit for an ‘Ask Me Anything’ (AMA) session. Of course a lot of questions went straight down the sequel route, while others were interested in the Oculus Quest version.
Oculus Quest was announced a week ago during Oculus Connect 5 (OC5), offering a standalone experience that could almost measure up to Oculus Rift, priced the same at $399 USD and scheduled for release in Spring 2019. While the company said that over 50+ titles would be available at launch one of the few to be mentioned was Moss.
Having seen a version arrive for every major head-mounted display (HMD), Polyarc will be spending plenty of time optimizing the title for the less powerful standalone. One Reddit user was interested in whether the new headset would see any enhancements over the other version, to which Polyarc responded: “I think it’s a little to early to say on this one. By nature of the work required to support a new platform, we do have to dedicate a chunk of time to ensure it is done to quality.
“That said: in supporting our release on PC, we did manage to add some quality-of-life improvements by fixing a few bugs from the backlog or tuning experiences based on player feedback. So I wouldn’t rule it out. If it does happen though, we would want to bring those enhancements back to PSVR (and other platforms) if at all possible.”
Certainly interesting when it comes to the future of the title but what people really wanted to know was, will there be a book 2? A sequel certainly seems like a definite. Way before the AMA, VRFocus spoke with Polyarc Game Director, Danny Bulla who did say that “we have a larger story that we want to tell.”
This was pretty much the stance the team took on Reddit, saying: “We DO have plans for both Quill and the world of Moss going forward. It’s hard to give a “when” just yet, but we hope it doesn’t take too long for us to share more along this line.”
For fans wanting to learn more you’ll have to be patient as Polyarc isn’t ready to reveal any specific details just yet. When it does VRFocus will let you know.
