Oculus Quest Developer Settings Suggest Full Cross-Buy With Oculus Go

The Oculus Platform SDK settings indicate that the upcoming Oculus Quest will have full cross-buy with Oculus Go.

At Oculus Connect 5 Facebook told us that cross-buy between the PC-based Rift and Quest would be up to developers. But the question remained as to cross-buy with the mobile Oculus Go headset.

While some have speculated that since it runs the same OS it must run the same store, there has been no official confirmation of this. Others speculated that Quest would have a third Oculus Store- meaning if you owned all 3 Oculus headsets you’d need to buy apps separately on each.

Thankfully, the Oculus Platform SDK settings list Quest under the same app ID field as Go and Gear VR. The app ID uniquely identifies each Oculus Store listing, so having the same ID almost certainly means they have the same store page. This would mean full cross-buy, no developer approval needed.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you’ll have all your Go titles on Quest. Some won’t be ported due to being abandoned by the developer. Others won’t meet the stricter curation policies Facebook intends to use for the 6DoF standalone.

So if our assessment is correct, there will “only” be two separate Oculus Stores- one for PC and one for mobile. Buying an app on the PC store gives you it for Rift and the upcoming Rift S. Buying on the mobile store should give you it on Quest, Go, and Samsung Gear VR. And if a developer chooses, they can have cross-buy between these two stores.

While we’d prefer total cross-buy between all Oculus headsets, this finding should put to rest fears of re-buying games on each headset. Hopefully plenty of developers enable Rift cross-buy so that buying on Oculus Store means owning on all Oculus headsets.
