Virtual reality (VR) titles like Echo Combat have showcased how popular and fun zero-gravity shooters can be. Looking to muscle in on this genre is Ubisoft’s upcoming action title Space Junkies. Today, the studio has announced not only the release date but also that there will be a PlayStation VR version as well.
Space Junkies has been designed as an intense arcade-style first-person shooter with jetpacks, flying around orbital arenas with players engaging in solo deathmatch battles or teaming up in 2 vs 2 battles.
“Working with Virtual Reality allowed us to add a real sense of presence for the players. Space Junkies utilizes 3D-localized audio, which will help you hear and locate both your enemies and teammates,” explains Adrian Lacey
“Before entering a game, players meet together in the lobby and have the opportunity to share tricks and work on their strategy with teammates before getting into the Orbital Arenas. Before entering matches players will be able to choose from a selection of characters, each one offering distinct gameplay advantages in terms of speed and resistance. When spawning they’ll also be able to pick two pieces of equipment as well as their weaponry which provides a mix of both one-handed and two-handed guns.
The title will see a simultaneous launch across Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR, with the later version working with the DualShock 4 controller. Ahead of the official release Ubisoft has revealed it’ll be holding another closed beta – date TBA – so if you want to signup head to the official registration page.
Earlier this month Ubisoft made the surprise announcement regarding Space Junkies Arcade, rolling the title out to over 100 location-based entertainment (LBE) centres involved in VR around the world. Also, don’t forget to signup and find one of the 32 participating arcades in the tournament, which begins next week on 19th February.
Space Junkies is scheduled for launch on 26th March 2019 with players able to choose from seven weapons, six specialized pieces of equipment and five characters with more on the horizon. VRFocus will continue its coverage of the title, reporting back with any further updates in the run up to launch.
