Cosmic Trip and Starbear Taxi Dev Working on Oculus Quest Title Fujii

When it comes to highly stylised virtual reality (VR) worlds, filled with colour and life then indie studio Funktronic Labs is in a league of its own. With titles like Cosmic Trip and Starbear Taxi under its belt, it’s no surprise that the team’s next project would be just as weird and wonderful as before, announcing Fujii today.

Fujii

Looking like one of those videogames that’s hard to describe and simply needs to be played to understand, Fujii is a serene musical gardening adventure if that helps. Funktonic Labs calls it a ‘mystical journey that traverses a series of otherworldly, organic landscapes’, where players can explore three diverse biomes, collecting seeds to grow rare and musically-activated plants.

Featuring an interactive soundtrack by French artist and composer, Norman Bambi, each biome brings its own biodiversity and plant interactions, flowing between outdoor exploration and creative gardening. After collecting seeds players can bring them home to cultivate and customize their own unique, otherworldly garden, relaxing with their companion gnome whilst introducing creatures and insect life sourced from the wild.

“Eddie Lee (founder, Funktronic Labs) has found a great deal of joy and positivity through gardening, and has long dreamed of developing an experience that expressed the magical, therapeutic nature of plants,” states the team. “Fujii is an attempt to capture that feeling, and to share in the modern plant zeitgeist. Take care of your garden, and your garden will take care of you.”

Fujii

Fujii is a game to get cosy with, and the Quest’s standalone form factor empowers users to do just that. We’re also excited to see users experience Fujii outdoors, thanks to the unique portability of the headset,” the studio adds.

Funktronic Labs is developing Fujii not only for Oculus Quest but also SteamVR headsets as well, with Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, and Valve Index (w/ Knuckles support) all supported. The title has a planned release date of 27th June, 2019, and will retail for $14.99. It’s currently available to Wishlist on Steam.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Funktronic Labs and Fujii, reporting back with any further updates ahead of launch.
