Pokémon Detective Pikachu is about to launch in cinemas and for those Pokémon fans out there who love the augmented reality (AR) videogame Niantic Labs is hosting a special promotion to coincide with the movie.
In collaboration with The Pokémon Company International, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Legendary Pictures, the studio will be offering a variety of movie-inspired in-game activities and content for Pokémon GO players.
Features will include more encounters with Pokémon seen in the movie, such as Bulbasaur, Jigglypuff, Psyduck, Aipom, and Snubbull. Plus the opportunity to catch Shiny Aipom. While using the GO Snapshot features, players might just get photobombed by a Pikachu wearing a detective hat, giving them a chance to catch the Pokémon. And whilst catching all these Pokémon players can earn double XP.
That’s not all. There will be movie-themed field research, special raid battles featuring Pokémon with starring roles in the film and new avatar items including a detective hat with Pikachu ears.
“We’re excited for fans around the world to immerse themselves in the latest Pokémon adventure with ‘POKÉMON Detective Pikachu,’” said J.C. Smith, senior director of consumer marketing at The Pokémon Company International in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating the first live-action film with fun new experiences in Pokémon GO.”
Pokémon Detective Pikachu will premiere in UK and North America cinemas on 10th May 2019, with Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific seeing the movie this month. The Pokémon GO content is available from today (7th May) until 17th May 2019.
The first-ever live-action Pokémon film, Pokémon Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu. When ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, his 21-year-old son Tim decides to find out what happened. To help with the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu.
While Pokémon GO is Niantic Labs’ most well-known AR title, the studio is working with another famous brand to bring it into the AR realm, Harry Potter. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is coming to iOS and Android mobile devices in 2019. VRFocus will continue its AR coverage as more updates and new titles are announced, such as Minecraft AR.
