Valve Confirms a ‘Flagship VR Title’ is Coming in 2019; Will Support Any SteamVR Headset

Facebook might be trying to dominate this weeks news thanks to its double headset announcement during F8 2019 this week, but that hasn’t stopped Valve from doing its best to turn attention towards its own device, the Valve Index. It’s not just virtual reality (VR) hardware Valve has developed, as it has long been rumoured the Seattle-based company is working on three VR titles. Finally, a very small piece of info has been released.

Valve Index

Valve has finally gone on record and confirmed that one VR experience is expected to arrive later this year. Described as a ‘flagship VR title’, in typical Valve fashion there are no other details about the videogame, no name, no genre, no price, or even if it’ll be a new IP or as preexisting one – everyone crosses their fingers for Half Life VR. All the representative would confirm is that it’ll support any headset compatible with Steam, so that includes Valve Index, Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift S, HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

While all that support is great the title must surely be something to showcase the Valve Index and those controllers in the best light. Half Life might be the most famous of Valve’s brands it’s not the only one. Portal, Left 4 Dead, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Artifact and of course, VR offering The Lab are just some of the other videogames the company is known for.

Until Valve decides to release further info on the videogame you’ll just have to spend the time deciding whether or not the new headset is worth the cost. There are a range of prices for Valve Index depending on the HTC Vive kit you might already own. The headset itself is $499, but that does not include controllers or tracking system – so that’s the one for Vive owners. For those starting afresh – or who want the latest and best – then its the full kit which will retail for $999. Pre-orders are now live with shipments beginning on 28th June.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Valve, reporting back with the latest announcements as and when they happen.
