When Amazon features on VRFocus it’s usually because of another retail promotion offering some hefty virtual reality (VR) hardware discounts. This week, however, Amazon takes another step into the VR realm by launching its Prime Video service to mobile headsets Oculus Go, Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Quest.
Only available to customers in the US and UK, Amazon Prime Video VR allows you to watch the streaming service’s huge library of TV shows and movies, all in your very own personal theatre. From Prime Video Original movies like Oscar-nominated Cold War, Guava Island, Chasing Happiness and The Lost City of Z to TV shows such as The Grand Tour, Good Omens, or The Man in the High Castle, there’s no shortage of content. Plus you can even find it all using voice-powered search.
To coincide with the launch this week the app is offering 10 360° videos for you to enjoy, like the Emmy-nominated short film INVASION! by Baobab Studios, and Greenland Melting, a documentary that explores the effects of climate change on Greenland in the Arctic. Prime Video VR will also continue adding VR specific content as time goes on.
The app is completely free, all you need is an Amazon Prime membership to have full access to all the Prime Video and VR content, which includes titles you’ve bought or rented, plus sports, live events, and channel subscriptions purchased through Amazon. If you don’t have Amazon Prime you can still use the app as a video player to watch anything from your personal library in VR.
While videogames are generally seen as the main draw when it comes to devices like Oculus Rift/Rift S, headsets like Oculus Go have found success through media apps like Netflix or Hulu. Bigscreen Beta released an update earlier this month, giving users over 50+ channels to choose from (depending on the country) as well as making the experience more social. Or for Oculus Go there’s always Oculus TV, designed as a hub for all of this style of entertainment.
VRFocus will continue its coverage of Prime Video VR, reporting back with further updates to the VR content.
