Film festivals around the world have been embracing immersive content creation for a while now, with the likes of Sundance, Tribeca and even prestigious events such as the Venice International Film Festival welcome new crops of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) content. Later this year, and returning for its fourth instalment is Co_Lab_Create, an XR event held alongside the Byron Bay International Film Festival.
While the film festival itself is open to anyone wishing to purchase a ticket, Co_Lab_Create is entirely focused towards professionals working in the field of XR. The selective event is a networking, collaborative think-tank designed to help provide connections, skills and knowledge enhancement to delegates, with speakers attending from around the world. No speakers have been confirmed at this present time for the 2019 event. In 2018 Co_Lab_Create attracted speakers such as Priscilla Harris – Head of Virtual Reality for HTC Australia/NZ, Patrick Wagner – Head of Interactive – Weta Workshop and Dr Barbara Lippe – Head of Content at HolodeckVR, to name just a few.
Alongside the collection of talks Co_Lab_Create also runs an XR Incubator. The initiative is currently seeking applications from Women and XR practitioners from diverse backgrounds for the 2nd round of its Make Diversity Reality Incubator. Supported by Create NSW, the incubator is looking to mentor women and people of diverse backgrounds based in New South Wales, Australia, over 4 days, from 19th-22nd October 2019.
Additionally, attendees at Co_Lab_Create will see a range of 360-degree and interactive VR content with an awards ceremony also taking place. Last year’s event saw the likes of Tyler Hurd’s Chorus, Space Dream, I Saw the Future and seven other films shown.
The Byron Bay International Film Festival takes place from 18th – 27th October 2019, with Co_Lab_Create held on 19th – 20th. As Co_Lab_Create is for industry professionals only participation requires accreditation, of which spaces are limited. To register your interest head to the official page.
VRFocus will continue its coverage of all the last film festivals encouraging XR content creation, reporting back with the latest updates.
