Community Download: Do You Pledge To VR Kickstarter Campaigns?

Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published (usually) every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate. For today, we want to hear what you think about VR kickstarters and other crowdfunding campaigns.

The Oculus Rift Kickstarter from Palmer Luckey back in 2012 was a key catalyst in the age of modern virtual reality technology that we see today. Over 9,000 backers pitched in to help raise over $2.4M and the VR industry has never been the same since.

Lots of big VR projects have gotten their start on Kickstarter and other crowdfunding  platforms over the years. Currently, there are two big upcoming games (LOW-FI and Zenith) that have turned to the platform with several other projects previously finding success (and in some cases, failure instead.)

The reality of the matter is that a lot of developers put themselves out there and ask for help funding what might be their dream project or the culmination of their life’s work. Even if the funding is successful there is never a guarantee that the project will see the light of day. But at the same time, your funding could help create something special that may not exist otherwise — such as the Oculus Rift.

So the question at hand is: Do you (still) fund VR Kickstarter and other crowdfunding campaigns? If not, is it too risk or expensive? If so, why? Let us know down in the comments below!
