Cyberpunk World Low-Fi Achieves Kickstarter Funding Goal in 4 Days

It’s been another successful week for virtual reality (VR) projects on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter. Yesterday VRFocus reported on VRGO Mini hitting its target and today cyberpunk adventure Low-Fi has done the same, soaring past $60,000 CAD in only four days.

The work of indie VR developer Iris VR, Low-Fi is the spiritual successor to Technolust, the team’s first immersive experience released in 2016. Having passed the funding goal thanks to over 700 backers and with 26 days still to go eyes now turn to the stretch goals, which have slightly changed since the initial launch.

Originally, the stretch goals included PlayStation VR and Oculus Quest support at $500,000 and $850,000 respectively. These have been reduced quite significantly while others have been added. Currently, the list is:

  • $52k – Licensed Music
  • $64k – Wastelands Area
  • $75k – Undisclosed
  • $90k – Undisclosed
  • $100k – Undisclosed
  • $256k – Next-Gen PlayStation VR support
  • $420k – Undisclosed
  • $512k – Undisclosed
  • $555k – Undisclosed
  • $600k – Oculus Quest support

Described as “a massive open-world sandbox-style adventure with action elements,” Low-Fi promises a non-linear world inspired by films such Blade Runner and Robocop, putting you into a dystopian future as a police officer recently transferred to a crime-ridden section of city-block 303. In this world, most of humanity has merged with The Platform, a ubiquitous VR simulation. Those that haven’t are dubbed ‘low-fi’ of which you are one of them, patrolling the streets and skies, under your jurisdiction are other low-fi and human intelligence (or below) artificial life forms.

You can do your job keeping law and order, solving crimes and advancing narratives. Or delve into the seedy depths of the city, take bribes rather than arrest criminals, frame a third party for personal gain or just hang out in the arcades and casinos spending credits.

Iris VR has big plans for Low-Fi, stating that the videogame will feature:

  • Hundreds of crimes and stories to solve and explore complete with branching narratives and dialogue
  • Interactive Photo-realistic NPCs
  • Procedural markets with thousands of purchasable item possibilities
  • Companion NPCs (biological and synthetic)
  • Gun-play (Optional)
  • Arcade Mini-games

Being made for PC VR headsets like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality, a development build is expected to be made available to Kickstarter backers in October with the fully finished version expected to arrive sometime in 2020. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.
