Sony Confirms E3 2020 Won’t Feature PlayStation

When it comes to big videogame announcements the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles every June tends to be the highlight of every year. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) was noticeably absent last year, leaving not only a big gap news wise but physically as well. Now it looks like that trend is set to continue with the company confirming it won’t be attending E3 2020.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, SIE made the following statement regarding the show: “After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.

“We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favourite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”

This is fairly significant due to PlayStation 5 launching at the end of the year, as the company has always used E3 to announce the next PlayStation console, all the way back to the original during the very first event in 1995. Now this leaves a surprise PlayStation 5 announcement wide open as to whether SIE will use one of these consumer events or its newly formed State of Play broadcast to officially reveal the console. There were four State of Play shows in 2019 showcasing new and upcoming titles for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR.

PlayStation even appeared during CES 2020 last week during Sony’s press conference with a brief reveal of the PlayStation 5 logo and nothing more.

As for E3 2020, with SIE absent PlayStation VR news is likely to be rather muted, especially when it comes to new demos. This also leaves the event open for Microsoft to dominate with the Xbox Series X. As further details of SIE plans for 2020 come to light VRFocus will let you know.
