Sony to Discuss PlayStation 5’s System Architecture Tomorrow

Over the past year, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has released various snippets regarding its next console, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) but nobody knows what it looks like. Competitor Xbox Series X has already been well documented and soon it’ll be PlayStation 5’s turn with the company confirming that more details will be released tomorrow.

Taking place on 18th March over on the PlayStation Blog at 9am PT/ 12pm ET/4pm GMT, PlayStation 5’s Lead System Architect Mark Cerny will be providing: “a deep dive into PS5’s system architecture and how it will shape the future of games.”

Hopefully, this will answer all the questions still left outstanding relating to the new console’s design and performance. Previously Jim Ryan, President and CEO, SIE, has mentioned that the PS5 will feature a solid-state drive (SSD) to ensure fast read/write speeds while the new DualShock 5 controllers will be updated with enhanced haptics on the triggers for a more tactile feel.

VRFocus expects Cerny to touch on PlayStation VR support as he has previously mentioned the headset will work with PlayStation 5. It’ll be interesting to find out whether PlayStation VR will see any notable visual enhancements from the new console. A number of patents have popped up showcasing what a possible PlayStation VR 2 could be capable of but Sony has yet to confirm those plans and likely won’t tomorrow.

PlayStation VRWith the coronavirus (COVID-19) forcing many events to cancel this has lead companies like Facebook to move to an online announcement format. SIE began this process early last year with its State of Play broadcasts purely for videogames. It then when even further by ditching its attendance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2019 and 2020 – and now E3 2020 has been completely cancelled.

There’s also the issue regarding how the current pandemic will affect manufacturing as companies like Facebook and Valve have cited coronavirus as causing a delay to replenishing Oculus Quest and Index stock. Whether Cerny will help allay doubts relating to the supply chain remains to be seen, or whether he’ll keep it entirely technical.

As further details are released regarding PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR, VRFocus will keep you up to date.
