Latest Oculus Rift S Improvements Include Head Tracking & Image Stabilisation

Oculus Rift S 1

Unlike the Oculus Quest which has seen a raft of recent updates, the Oculus Rift S has been left out with only minor tweaks. Whilst not exactly staggering, today the company has begun rolling out v20 of its PC software build adding a couple of decent updates in the process.

While it may take a few days for the update to reach you, what you can look forward to is improved head tracking with Oculus saying it has: “enhanced rendering stability for Rift S.” Hopefully that’ll keep things nice and smooth if you’ve been having issues.

For those who love to record their gameplay that’s been further enhance with the addition of an image stabilization feature. “This enhancement will reduce unwanted motion that can happen when looking around in-VR while streaming,” Oculus notes. So that should mean really hectic gameplay sessions on Beat Saber won’t look as erratic.

Apart from a small Oculus Link tweak that’s your lot. Oculus Quest hasn’t been forgotten but its v20 build is fairly minor:

Parties

  • When you’re in a party, you can now choose to mute anyone else in the party on a person-by-person basis. This means that you can mute anyone in the party in your own headset without muting them for the whole party.

Fixes

  • Fixed a bug that caused audio to stop when a Touch controller was disconnected in some apps and experiences.

When it comes to Oculus and Facebook the real news this week isn’t the build update but the update to how users will be able to login later this year and into the future. Requiring a Facebook account to access all features of the VR platform from 2023, the previous Oculus accounts will eventually cease to exist, creating a massive furore in the process.

Whether you care or aren’t really bothered about the changes Facebook is a dominant force in VR which answers to no one. As this topic continues to boil, VRFocus will keep you posted.
