ZapBox Kickstarter Aims to Make Mixed Reality Affordable

ZapBox

Augmented reality (AR) specialist Zappar creates immersive content as well as encouraging those who wish to via its ZapWorks platform. In 2016 it launched the ZapBox, a cardboard mixed reality (MR) device as an entry-level solution for developers. Today, the ZapBox returns in a new form, with a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign in tow.

The launch of the Zapbox Kickstarter today aims to raise $65,000 USD to make this 6 DoF, MR device a reality. Utilising smartphones like its forbear, instead of a bulky cardboard housing the redesign looks more like an unusual set of glasses.

In a press release Zappar says that the ZapBox offers: “an almost uninterrupted peripheral view of the real world” whilst at the same time ” naturally blends into the immersive content displayed in front of the user in 3D.” The MR setup: “allows for fully opaque content and true blacks” whilst the open, glasses style design means you can use your peripheral vision to stay connected to the real world. In addition to the headsets a pair of 6-DoF controllers are included to provide an interactive element.

Developers will be able to create content using either a Unity plugin for native iOS or Android apps or ZapWorks Studio to view projects instantly in the ZapBox app.

“We wanted developers to be able to explore the possibilities of immersive 6-DoF MR and VR  experiences, without the high cost of entry for dedicated hardware,” said Simon Taylor, Co-Founder and Chief R&D Officer at Zappar in a statement. “All-new ZapBox offers a great balance between affordability and capability that lets Unity and ZapWorks users create the impactful experiences they want.”

To back the campaign and secure a ZapBox you’ll need to go for the $40 tier or for a multi-unit deal there’s a 10-pack available for $299. The all-new ZapBox is compatible with all iPhones from the iPhone 6S and newer as well as the Samsung S-series and Google Pixel. For further updates on the campaign, keep reading VRFocus.
