Videogame development can be a rocky road even when a project looks promising and that’s very much been the case for team-based shooter Alvo and its developer Mardonpol Inc. Thankfully that journey will soon bear fruit as the studio is set to launch Alvo next week for PlayStation VR.
Originally slated for release back in 2018 before events went awry, Alvo is a purely online tactical virtual reality (VR) first-person shooter (FPS) set across three gameplay modes: Search and Destroy, Team Deathmatch and Free 4 All. Fairly self-explanatory, Search and Destroy sees two teams of five compete, one to plant a bomb and the other to defend a location defusing any bombs planted. Team Deathmatch is simply 5v5 most kills wins and Free 4 All is everyone for themselves.
PlayStation VR players will have the choice of playing Alvo using the DualShock 4, PlayStation Move and PlayStation Aim controller. Considering the realistic nature of Alvo the gameplay should work very well with the gun peripheral, much in the same way Firewall Zero Hour does. If you don’t already own a PlayStation Aim controller then places like eBay are your best bet, new ones are very hard to find.
Alvo will offer a selection of maps for players to learn, each with day and night cycles to provide some visual variation. They’ll also be able to customise their loadouts and characters to suit their style of play. The team is also working on plenty of new content for after the launch including: “New Weapons, Attachments, Perks, Gadgets, Gamemodes, Killstreaks and also 4 brand new maps currently in development.”
While the VR community certainly seems keen on Alvo‘s launch the videogame has much more competition in 2021 than it did back in 2018. There are plenty of online shooters for VR players already out and still to come, Firewall Zero Hour, Pavlov Shack, Solaris Offworld Combat, Onward, Vail VR, Hyper Dash and Contractors to name a few, so it’ll be exciting to see what Alvo can do.
Once the PlayStation VR launch has taken place Alvo will then arrive for Oculus Quest and PC VR headsets in June. It’ll feature crossplay functionality between the headsets which should hopefully ensure matches are quickly and easily filled. For further updates on Alvo, keep reading VRFocus.
