Experience VR High Above London

The London skyline has many iconic buildings. One of the more recent additions is The Shard, which has just launched a new virtual reality (VR) experience titled The View from The Shard.

The new visitor attraction located at the top of the distinctive building has introduced two new VR experiences, both of which offer the visitor a unique view of London. The first is titled The Slide, and was created by VR content studio Happy Finish. The Slide allows users to take seat on a toboggan-style chair, don an Oculus Rift headset and experience a high-speed ride over and around The Shard building, experiencing steep drops and dizzying heights. The images used for The Slide were captured in 360-degrees using a custom camera rig to show a highly realistic view of London from above.

Rory Byrne, Client Director, at Happy Finish said, “The View from The Shard asked us to build a thrilling addition to enhance their already spectacular view. By using virtual reality and our three degrees of movement motion platform we are able to give the visitors an experience like no other in London. An unparalleled view of the city during an exhilarating ride around The Shard at speeds of 100mph.”

The second experience on offer is called Vertigo, and is a room-scale experience created by INITION. The visitor straps on a HTC Vive headset and Vive Trackers and watches as the walls and floor falls away, giving the user an uninhibited view of London far below. The user is then given various task to complete which will involve the ability to balance and navigate while seemingly dangling in empty air.

Patrick Allen, CEO of The View from The Shard said, “As the tallest attraction in the Europe, we are always looking for new ways to offer exciting and innovative experiences for our visitors. The consumer technology space has been an area we’ve been keen to explore for a while and we are excited to be working with the design companies behind the VR, Happy Finish and INITION, to introduce these two new immersive adventures to the attraction’s visitors.”

VRFocus will continue to bring you news on new and innovative VR experiences.
