Google’s virtual reality (VR) platform, Daydream, launched late last year with a modest two phones supporting it; Google’s own Pixel and Pixel XL handsets. More hardware manufacturers have been jumping on board recently however, and Google expects at least 11 handsets supporting Daydream to be available before the end of 2017.
In a recent Alphabet earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that there would be 11 Android smartphones that support Google’s Daydream by the end of the year. Currently the line-up includes just six handsets – Pixel, Pixel XL, Motorola Moto Z, Huawei Mate 9 Pro, ZTE Axon 7 and ASUS ZenFone AR – so this would see the range of compatible devices more than double within the next few months.
Samsung and Lenovo are amongst the selection of hardware manufacturers that had previously committed to supporting the Daydream platform, so expect some developments from these companies in the next few weeks.
The Daydream platform continues to grow, with hundreds of VR videogames and applications now available. You can find out more about the format in VRFocus’ handy guide to Google Daydream.
