Oculus Rift and Touch now Coming as a Permanent Bundle for £499

The biggest virtual reality (VR) news this week has certainly centred around Oculus Rift, with Facebook slashing the price of the headset down to $399 USD/£399 GBP. That announcement came on Monday, now closing out the week the company has another major reveal, Oculus Rift and Touch will be permanently bundled together with a new price of £499 after the sale ends.

With the attention the summer sale has brought, Oculus has undoubtedly added a few more customers to its platform. With the offer only limited in time the natural expectation was that the regular price of £598 would return, but that’s not the case. As you can tell from the image below of the new package, included in the box is the Oculus Rift headset, two sensors, Touch controllers and relevant cables.

There’s one omission that was previously included, and that’s an Xbox One controller. Having been the standard input method for Oculus Rift since launch it’s no surprise that Microsoft’s gamepad has now been removed, with Oculus wanting to solely concentrate on its own wireless motion controllers. What that will mean however is that older titles that only supported the gamepad will need to be updated to support this new package, or else new customers will need to go out and buy an Xbox One controller and dongle to play those videogames.

When consumers activate the motion controllers during setup they’ll also have six free titles to play: Lucky’s Tale, Medium, ToyboxQuillDead and Buried, and Robo Recall – although at present Dragon Front is also listed.

With the current promotion its never been a better time to jump into VR. There are loads of good titles available for the headset, with Lone Echo and Echo Arena coming out next week and Brass TacticsFrom Other Suns, and Arktika.1  launching later this year.
