The annual spate of Halloween horror releases will be drawing to a close soon, with October 2017 having been inundated with scary virtual reality (VR) videogames and other immersive experiences that’ll make you jump. Now, there’s a new film to watch, a 360-degree short created by VML London and Irresistible Films called The Killer.
The Killer, is a dark and disturbing VR psychological thriller where you become the captured and tortured prisoner of a merciless madman.
Created to support Spitalfields Crypt Trust, a London charity that for over 50 years has offered a safe place for people to escape life on the streets of East London, the film has a twist at the end (Spoiler Alert), where you find out just who the killer really is. He is homelessness personified.
“Anyone who has been homeless will understand this film” said one of the charity’s exregular visitors, now volunteer. “I couldn’t drink enough and had no way to get out. I was so depressed and down in a hostel. People around me kept on drinking. I ended up sleeping in a cupboard by a tunnel. Weeks turn into months, it’s endless.”
The script is taken from true stories of people who lived on the streets, and had its two-night premiere over this past Halloween weekend at Restoration Station in Shoreditch. Additionally, the film was showcased at Veero’s first pop-up virtual reality (VR) cinema experience, Haunted Cinema in London.
“From the beginning, VML and Irresistible Films were focused on pushing the limits of narrative storytelling in the emerging medium of immersive 360 film and using this to expose a new audience to the realities of London’s alarming homeless problem,” said Robb Smigielski, Executive Creative Director, VML London in a statement. “We are raising awareness for an incredible charity, and ultimately asking our audience to reconsider their assumptions about the terrifying reality of homelessness.”
