Though Magic Leap are yet to release any type of tangible product, one thing the company does seem to be good at is teasing its audience. A new video released by the company still doesn’t show a product, but does talk a lot about ideas and inspiration.
The video is titled ‘Magic Leap: How It All Began’ and oddly, features no footage of a Magic Leap product, nor any Magic Leap branding save for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of a Magic Leap branded notebook.
Instead, the audience is treated to two minutes of footage of people doing things like waking up, getting ready and going to work or school in various places across the globe, while Magic Leap founder Rony Abovitz speaks about ‘The story of an art project that turned into a tech start-up.’
The reactions to the video amount the YouTube commenters were decidedly lukewarm, with many dismissing the video, while some were considerably more aggressive, with one commenter impatiently saying: “Years of waiting and still no product. Where is it?”
Others showed more enthusiasm and excitement, stating that Magic Leap would blow everyone away and change everything.
So far, Magic Leap have secured over $6 billion (USD) in funding, much of it coming from big names such as Google, Alibaba and Qualcomm. A recent leak of a patent application showed a device that could be the Magic Leap headset, though Magic Leap were quick to deny that its product resembled the patent.
Supposedly, the Magic Leap device will be bigger than a standard pair of glasses, though considerably smaller than most VR head-mounted displays (HMDs), some rumours say the device will be shipping to select users within six months, retailing for between $1,500 to £2,000, though this has yet to be substantiated, like much of the information on Magic Leap.
