Welcome to the first in a regular series of diaries that will document the entire development process of Reality Clash, a mobile AR combat videogame from the Reality Gaming Group. If you’re not aware of Reality Clash, here’s a brief bluffer’s guide…
It’s is a free-to-play videogame for iPhone and Android devices that uses the phone’s camera to render an augmented reality (AR) view of the world on-screen, with geolocation gameplay encouraging players to enter face-to-face combat with each other in real time. Think Pokémon GO crossed with Call of Duty and you’re pretty much in the right ballpark.
Combat will take place in real locations – players can invite friends, join tournaments and set up battles in urban areas, parks and woodlands. In addition, gamers will be able to acquire and trade a whole host of armoury. But, uniquely, these guns can be traded and sold through the Reality Clash platform for money. As a player, you can become a virtual arms dealer or simply enjoy your tactical advantage in the title. It’s due for release in Q3 of 2018.
So, that’s our videogame – and here’s where we are in the dev process: We’ve already begun testing the platform in pre-production test scenes using simple placeholder animated characters and weapons. The goal for this is to ensure we can deliver a solid AR experience, which can incorporate dynamic lighting based on the camera brightness, as well as good shadows to ground objects within the real-world.
Prototyping has also involved us leaving our comfy offices and testing the early builds in real-world situations. This type of testing helps us understand the limitations of the latest AR technology and how we can further improve our videogame design to maximise player enjoyment.
This helps us answer such vital questions as to how far players can be from each other and still be able to see their avatars clearly enough to engage in a fire fight. To that end, here’s an exclusive video of this prototyping process:
Meanwhile, our team of 3D artists have also been busy working on new weapon assets for our Initial Coin Offering (ICO) fundraising backers, who will be able to purchase them on Reality Clash’s trading platform using their RCC Gold coins, the title’s own crypto currency – but more on that in future instalments!
It’s an incredibly exciting project to be working on. We look forward to telling you more over the coming weeks.
