Blink and you’d would have missed it, but Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) launched a trail programme on Friday allowing consumers the opportunity to demo PlayStation VR in their own home for 14 days. If at the end of the trail participants want to keep the headset, then they can for a discounted price. There’s just one little problem, SIE has already filled its quota of demo slots well before the original end date.
SIE had allocated 1,400 slots which were all made available on 1st December, with the programme running until 14th December. Well that end date was a little optimistic with the Try PlayStation VR page stating: “The enthusiasm for trying PS VR is overwhelming,” going on to add: “We’re sorry, we have reached the maximum number of users who could sign up to try PlayStation VR. Please check your email for future programs from PlayStation.”
The popularity of the trial was probably helped by the timing and what was included, with the bundle featuring a PlayStation VR headset, a PlayStation Camera, two PlayStation Move controllers, a copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, and the newly updated Demo Disc 2.0.
For those lucky enough to bag a slot they could enjoy the entire lot for 14-days in the comfort of their own home, then either give it back or buy all of it. If they decide to purchase then the entire bundle would cost $300, saving $150 on the regular Skyrim VR bundle retail price.
There’s been no indication how many of those 1,400 slots have turned into sales just yet, but a deal like that is hard to turn down. Should a major percentage choose to buy, then it’s not unreasonable to expect an expansion of the trial in the future.
PlayStation VR has seen significant promotion from SIE, whether through the Black Friday deals or the new Demo Kiosks in the US. Also helping the headset are videogames like Skyrim VR and DOOM VFR which launched last week.
