Konrad the Kitten Showcases How Steam Early Access can Benefit VR Development

FusionPlay made its virtual reality (VR) debut back in 2016 with the Steam Early Access launch of Konrad the Kitten. Over the past 17 months, the team has worked hard to ensure the final edition of the videogame meets the demands of the VR community, and are proud to have reached a point where they can consider Konrad the Kitten ready to release as version 1.0.

Konrad the Kitten is a virtual pet simulator designed specifically for VR. Players must gain Konrad’s love and affection by making him happy, satisfying his basic needs as well as playing various different mini-games with him. Hunt with Konrad and catch as many of the nimble rodents as you can; put your skills and reactions to the test in the fishing mini-game; or try out the obstacle course, guiding Konrad carefully and skilfully through rings. The more you care for him, the faster his experience increases and his love for you grows.

The unique feature of Konrad the Kitten however, is the plush toy mode; this allows players to attach a motion-controller to a plush toy and engage with it directly in-game. Compatible with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality head-mounted displays (HMDs), any of the associated motion-controllers will work to recreate the simulation of your soft toy in the VR experience.

“Todays beta version is as good as final. Only some minor platform specific optimizations and some bugfixes will be done, [sic]” stated Konrad Kunze, Lead Game Designer at FusionPlay, in direct communication with VRFocus. “To celebrate the beta, a trailer was published that shows the new features and also the evolution of the game. From the very first prototype up to todays’ version, the game really changed a lot! This is a great example of visually explaining, how Early Access should work. [sic]”

That above mentioned trailer is embedded below, allowing gamers to gain a better understanding of the processes a VR experience goes through in order to deliver a compelling experience. As previously reported by VRFocus, Konrad the Kitten is due for release on 16th February 2018, priced at £14.99. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details from FusionPlay.
