Kids TV network Nickelodeon is getting in on the augmented reality (AR) trend this week by updating one of its mobile videogames with AR, whilst launching an entirely AR focused app. The videogame is Sky Whale, whilst the AR app is Do Not Touch.
Having accrued nearly 30 million global downloads since launch, popular mobile title Sky Whale will be adding its new AR mode this Spring, turning a user’s physical space into a Sky Whale sea and sky when viewed through their mobile device’s camera in a 360-degree challenge. As for gameplay, players will steer a narwhal, moving through the space to soar through the sky or swim underwater in a race to collect items and accumulate points for high scores.
While Nickelodeon’s brand-new Do Not Touch AR app, builds on the “Do Not Touch” button found in the award-winning Nick app. Do Not Touch AR features interactive surprises and mini games that highlight both Nickelodeon properties and iconic trademarks, like SpongeBob SquarePants, The Loud House, slime and the Kids’ Choice Awards blimp, along with original animations.
These animations and interactive experiences randomly generate, appearing in a user’s surrounding physical space which then allows them to see the action from all angles on the screen, and tapping characters and objects reveals more surprises.
These apps maybe Nickelodeon’s first foray into AR but the company has already begun experimenting with virtual reality (VR). Nickelodeon recently announced a new partnership with IMAX to bring SlimeZone – its first multiplayer, social VR experience – to select IMAX VR Centres globally this month.
