Ever been wandering around town and suddenly had the urge for a spot of fishing? Well with the wonders of modern augmented reality (AR) technology and a little help from virtual reality (VR) studio Resolution Games, you’ll soon be able to. The studio has announced its first foray into AR, taking its popular VR title Bait! and adding an AR twist with Bait! Under the Surface.
The third entry in Resolution Games’ Bait! franchise, Bait! Under the Surface will take the series’ gameplay into new territory, giving players the ability to create a fishing hole wherever they happen to be, whether that’s at home, travelling to work, or out doing a spot of shopping, all while having the collections and character development of the previous titles.
So there will be a range of fish to catch, each with its own monetary value thus allowing players to head to the AR fishing shop to spend their earnings on useful equipment.
The original Bait!, was released to critical acclaim on Samsung Gear VR in 2016 and Google Daydream in 2017, providing one of the earliest VR experiences of casting a rod and reeling in a big catch. To date Resolution Games has said it has garnered over 2 million downloads. In November 2017 the developer announced Bait! Arctic Open specifically for social platform Facebook Spaces on Oculus Rift, focused more towards multiplayer fishing.
“We’re so grateful to have been able to get an early start in VR, and to have become key players in helping to shape the standards for content being created in the space,” said Tommy Palm, CEO and co-founder of Resolution Games in a statement. “In terms of technology, AR and VR are rooted in many of the same principles. Given our experience in mobile VR, it’s only natural to transition these learnings to AR. These are still the early days of AR gaming, and just as we’ve done in VR we’re eager to play our part in helping to shape its journey.”
Resolution Games will have an early demo on display during the Games Developer Conference (GDC) 2018 next week, prior to launching Bait! Under the Surface for both iOS and Android devices later this year. For any further updates, keep reading VRFocus.
