Among the slew of horror titles launched around Halloween last year was an Early Access release by indie team Mad About Games Studios with Reficul. The open world survival horror has seen numerous updates since then, with today’s being the fully completed version.
Designed specifically for VR headsets, Reficul is set in a seemingly normal North American town. However, a darkness has swept through the world creating a dangerous and challenging place filled with creatures that lurk in the darkness.
Reficul mixes both normal weaponry and magic together, with players having access to a range or guns to protect themselves as well as powerful magical relics, all of which support both right and left-handed use. To make the experience even more immersive and realistic there are no menu’s to speak of, meaning that your inventory is limited to what you can carry.
The title also uses a perma-death system and procedural generation, so once you die and return back to play again enemies will have changed and the story objectives will be different. Adding to all that there are no glowing way-point markers or highlighted pickups to help you out, you just need to explore and not die.
Mad About Games Studios has sought to make Reficul open and easy to play for all VR gamers, so the title features both standard teleportation and smooth locomotion for those that want it.
On top of the main campaign the development team has included some additional bonus games. One is a wave-based shooter featuring aliens and giant spiders, whilst the other is a zombie survival experience.
Reficul is currently available on Steam for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive with a 10 percent discount, dropping the price from £11.39 GBP down to £10.25 until 16th May, 2018. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Mad About Games Studios and Reficul, reporting back with any further updates.
