For those wanting to watch live immersive sports the NextVR app is one of the best places to check out content from the NBA, WrestleMania, and NFL, as well as concerts and other live events. For a long time the app was only available on mobile virtual reality (VR) headsets like Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream. That was then expanded to PlayStation VR and Windows Mixed Reality. Now it’s finally the turn of HTC Vive, with an Oculus Rift version in the works.
The NextVR app has now arrived via Viveport, not only for HTC Vive but also HTC Vive Pro. So users will now be able to go ringside for the latest boxing matches, jump into the front row of Live Nation concerts, get the best sideline view of ICC soccer matches or delve into haunted houses with Paranormal Evidence investigations.
The update continues NextVR’s recent roll out which started earlier this month with Oculus Go. When the headset was showcased during the Facebook Developers Conference (F8) the company also announced a new version of Oculus Venues, of which the NextVR app was now compatible. As Venues allow people watch live concerts, sports, comedy shows and more along with friends it was a natural fit for NextVR to be part a part of it.
So with Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Go now supported, what’s happening about Oculus Rift? Well NextVR has confirmed to Road to VR that a version for Oculus Rift is in the works, as well as a Steam release.
The company has not only been expanding its presence to more headsets, it has also been working on improving the users experience. Earlier this year NextVR announced work on implementing six degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) so viewers could more naturally explore the virtual space and improve fidelity that can take advantage of next generation headsets like Vive Pro.
As NextVR continues to improve its service VRFocus will keep you updated on the latest announcements.
