Godzilla, or Gojira, is one of the most famous figures to come out of Japan. The studio that created the titanic star of the screen have created numerous films that aim to present images of what carnage such a huge creature could wreak on a city like Tokyo. Now, with the help of the Microsoft HoloLens, fans will be able to see Godzilla invading the real Tokyo. From a safe distance.
The experience has been titled ‘Godzilla Nights’ and a select group will be able to don a HoloLens headset to watch a gigantic Godzilla hologram rampage across the city, buffeting their eardrums with his iconic roar.
To add further immersion, some actors have been hired who will wear military uniform and their own HoloLens headsets, reacting in fear and shock when Godzilla first appears and begins stomping towards the viewing platform where fans are situated.
Another part of the experience lets viewers see an augmented reality (AR) map of Tokyo and see a miniature table-top sized Godzilla and plot his course across the city. The experience forms part of Toho Studios plans to create a fully-fledged cinematic universe around Godzilla, the next part of which will be a new movie called Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is due out in 2019.
The HoloLens experience is currently limited to Tokyo, and participants had to apply via a special form on the Microsoft Japan website in order to be in with a chance of being selected. Only 140 people will get to take part, with those selected via a lottery.
The Godzilla Nights HoloLens experience is taking place from 24th-29th April, 2018, though applications to attend are already closed. The experience lasts for roughly 30 minutes, with five showings per day.
