Futuristic technologies such as Augmented and Mixed Reality are often unable to showcase their full potential in their initial phase. Usually the earliest interesting possibilities for real life application are first developed and tested as industrial prototypes in secret corporate innovation labs before being rolled out into production, maintenance and other processes. In short, the broad industry did not know anything about Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR), nor anything about the new glasses currently on the market. These times are now over. What was once science fiction for companies has already come very close to everyday reality. AR and MR are already being used as useful tools in industry.

Much of Augmented and Mixed Reality’s current success stems from the success of Microsoft’s Mixed Reality glasses: HoloLens. Until the HoloLens release, no other smart glasses managed to achieve such quick acceptance amongst enterprise, nor have there been any other glasses with as much agreement on the applicable possibilities. However, smart glasses such as the HoloLens are not the only responsible factor for AR and MR acceptance in the industry. Smartphones and tablets are now equipped with powerful processor power and precise sensor technology that enable augmented visualizations at a high level.

Every day, new opportunities for industrial Augmented and Mixed Reality usage are discovered and there seems to be no end in sight. Just recently, Apple released its ARKit, giving access to millions of developers to freely develop AR apps for the iPhone and iPad. New applications and concepts are being added on a daily rate. Our experience tells us that the technology that first emerges in the consumer market is usually then rapidly transferred to the industrial sector.

So far, three clear AR application fields of particular benefit have crystallized for the industry. In maintenance, operation and training, Augmented and Mixed Reality are on the right track to become an integral part of everyday work. Let’s take a detailed look at how Augmented and Mixed Reality optimize these areas and make companies fit for the digital age.

Maintenance made easy with real-time visualizations at the touch of a button

In most cases, a technician will be called when a machine needs to be serviced or repaired – simply because the technician is a gatekeeper for the specialised maintenance knowledge. This is an enormous cost factor and usually requires long wait times before the technician has even arrived. As a result the machines are at a standstill, resulting in further losses to sales or profits. The simplicity of Augmented Reality instructions or checklists allow maintenance work to be carried out immediately by anyone, even if they do not have any special expertise in the machinery.

Figure 1 shows a maintenance manual for a Leybold vacuum pump, an Atlas Group company. Using the HoloLens or IPad, employees are guided through step by step instructions for a filter exchange. Leybold offers this efficient service to its customers and has integrated Augmented and Mixed Reality into its own digitization strategy.

Comprehensible instructions facilitate the operation of complex systems and machines

For particularly complex machines, manuals are often needed for operations and processes. Since this complex machinery is usually accompanied by complex manuals, considerable time is often lost searching for the right information. With Augmented and Mixed Reality, targeted instructions or information is placed directly onto the machine ensuring that work can begin on the machine within seconds – without having to search for anything. With the latest smart technology, long searches for information is a thing of the past: all supported in AR / MR content creation platforms such as REFLEKT ONE.

The unique aspect about this technology is that the manual, handbook or technical documentation content does not need to be re-created for Augmented and Mixed Reality applications. Existing instructions created in current editorial systems can be integrated with REFLEKT ONE so that no additional effort is needed. The same applies to the existing CAD and media formats as well as their systems. For example, in the above illustration of a Combibloc filling machine from SIG, you can see how 3D data and handbook material was adopted for an AR iPad application. The manual is displayed directly onto the machine, making it easier for the employee to find the right information quickly. Here too, companies profit from significant time-saving as employees no longer need to waste time looking for work steps in encyclopaedic manuals. Instead they are guided through the machine’s work steps with Augmented or Mixed Reality, reducing error rates and improving the quality of the products.

More training with less effort: interactive AR training on smart glasses

Proficient training for complex medical equipment is a common challenge in the healthcare sector where hospital and nursing personnel need to precisely carry out procedures in high stress emergency scenarios on complex devices. Training efforts are often hindered by unavailable doctors and nurses or interrupted by emergencies. Not to mention the high costs of the training itself. With the aid of Augmented and Mixed Reality, we are moving closer to the digital hospital.

The PulsioFlexAR virtual training application from device manufacturer Getinge utilises Augmented and Mixed Reality to train medical staff on various application scenarios for their medical devices. In this way, staff can autonomously train themselves on various medical equipment functions to know exactly what to used when. By visualizing the training content directly onto the PulsioFlex device, the learning process and day-to-day usage is improved.
Training with intuitive technology enables doctors and staff to adapt to complex medical equipment and safely use them in high stress daily environments.

Outlook for the future of Augmented Reality

Augmented and Mixed Reality are becoming an integral part of the industry for optimizing existing processes. Of course, it must also be said: This technology is still very fresh in the industry and is therefore far from mature. But functionality is constantly improving to open up more possibilities for the future. When looking at the hardware, the AR and MR glasses need to optimize their display quality so that content is crisper and battery life must correspond to required operating times. Considering these two factors alone, smartphones and tablets are currently the most feasible tools for industry as a simple and readily available alternative.

On top of the hardware, content creation is crucial. Augmented and Mixed Reality must be easy to produce. And it must be possible for companies to produce the content in-house, where the experts for the content can be found. A hundred years ago, the first cars were produced by hand, today this is simply inconceivable. This way of thinking will also transfer to AR and MR. Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft are all investing into a future featuring AR and MR and just like many like-minded start-ups, they are all trying to fit the technology to industry. Just imagine how much this technology will assist and change your own day-to-day operations.

Mention training in medical education and most people picture classroom courses or e-learning seminars. But training should be more: it should be a learning concept that attracts participants to remember what they have spent the time to learn whilst providing the trainers with and efficient way to teach. Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality’s bring  new possibilities to attract students to learn, and to provide information to the trainers and organizers. This will help to increase the quality of trainings in the future.

Difference of Mixed Reality and Augmented Reality

Before a discussion can start about medical content for Mixed Reality, it is necessary to first clarify the term “Mixed Reality”. You will find different definitions for Mixed Reality (MR), often in close relation to Augmented Reality (AR). With Augmented Reality you are able to attach digital information like texts, videos, sounds, graphics or 3D models to real objects.

In Mixed Reality, holographic objects are projected into the real world to create a hybrid of the two. Both the virtual and real objects can coexist together or the virtual elements can overlay the real world entirely.

Mixed Reality is ready – content is missing

There are already plenty of low and high content apps for different medical applications featuring Augmented Reality in operation. You will also find many companies internationally that are creating 3D medical content for AR. However, this content is predominantly only being used on smartphones and tablets.

When you start to look for medical content for Mixed Reality, nearly nothing can be found so far. The main reason might be that are only a few readily available Mixed Reality devices on the market such as the Microsoft HoloLens or the Meta 2 from the Silicon Valley tech company Meta.

Need for more medical apps

Working with the HoloLens in the medical field opened my eyes to the possibilities for medical providers and patients alike. I quickly started to get more information about available medical content for Mixed Reality technologies and I haven’t stoped looking. Even though there are already a few specific medical apps available for the HoloLens, e.g. HoloHeart and HoloAnatomy (Microsoft) or Insight Heart (AnimaRes) with impressive visualizations, there is much more potential for the content. Exactly this has lead to medical software platform providers such as 3D4MEDICAL to develop Mixed Reality solutions for anatomy training in a project called “Esper”.

This lack of content lead us to create our own Hololens app, the result can be watched here:

To create this HoloLens application I found a great partner and supporter in the company RE´FLEKT. When looking for partners to create customized medical content for Mixed Reality, you might be astonished to discover the significant differences in costs and time for content creation. In this project, I was happy to find a solution that could be scabbily built up for future growth in a cost and time effective way.

Mixed reality – future of medical education

After video gaming, Goldman Sachs expects the biggest growth potential in Virtual Reality to be in the health care sector. This should already be a crucial argument for more companies to focus here. Creating specific medical content for Mixed Reality is already possible with a certain budget and I hope to see more 3D medical animation companies offering Mixed Reality content in the near future. This technology will definitely become a part of the standard medical education and also a helpful tool in certain medical applications.

Most conversations covering Augmented Reality glasses are currently focused on the Microsoft Hololens and the Meta 2 — followed by the rumors around Magic Leap. But there are many more players in the field such as ODG, Avegant and DAQRI. Last week, I had a meeting with DAQRI to get some updates on the product developments and to test their latest smart glasses. Here are some of my impressions.

It is no secret that the Los Angeles based DAQRI has had some ups and downs — big investments and delays in production. When they started with the Augmented Reality helmet for construction, media picked it up as the new star on the horizon. In the tech startup world we say: ‘they’ve found their niche’. However, the challenges for hardware producers are always abundant: whether it is the need for huge investments or the dependence on the market being ready for your product. When I tested the helmet for the first time last year I realized that it will take some time until this is a market-ready product, which is the case with almost all smart glasses.

From helmet to smart glasses

We’ve gotten used to testing all relevant smart glasses from Google Glass to Epson Moverio as well as everything from the Microsoft Hololens to the Meta 2. Since we are creating Augmented Reality applications with our own enterprise platform, the hardware producers are often interested in connecting their devices to our ecosystem. This gives me a great opportunity to compare the different headsets as they come out. I try to be as objective as possible but obviously testing with different applications and in different environments is sometimes a challenge.

It seemed that DAQRI realized that the niche for the helmet is quite small and that the construction business wouldn’t generate enough revenue. This led to the introduction of Daqri’s smart glasses. The specs of the glasses are mainly the same as from the helmet — only the thermal camera is missing. I’ve tried a test version with two different scenarios: a visualization of a jet engine and a virtual earth simulation.

Good display, comfortable glasses

The smart glasses have a belt to fix them properly on the head. You can pull it, put it on your head and it automatically adjusts the device. There is no need to adjust the belt or the glasses like you do with the Hololens. The first surprise: it is actually quite comfortable. Unlike other smart glasses, it is not heavy on the nose because they only weigh 312g (Hololens 579g, Meta 2 500g, ODG R9 189g, DAQRI helmet 1,500g), and the belt does a good job. This is particularly important for enterprise use cases and I see a lot of potential since you can move your head around without losing the device.

I started with the jet engine — a simple scenario with a turbine using object gaze to select items. It worked well and I had the second surprise: the display is very clear and bright. With a resolution of 1,360 x 768 pixel and a 44 degree field-of-view (Hololens <40, Meta 2 ca. 90, ODG R9 50, DAQRI helmet 44) the smart glasses are able to provide good results. If I compare how the content is displayed on the DAQRI device with the Hololens, I would say it is more or less the same grade of transparency.

Tracking under construction

No other Augmented Reality glasses have a more stable and precise tracking (SLAM, not talking about object tracking) than the Hololens — this also applies to DAQRI’s smart glasses. Unfortunately, I could only test the marker tracking but not SLAM. As with most glasses, the DAQRI device doesn’t have an object tracking yet, which is very important for enterprise scenarios that need to place the holographic objects precisely on the real object. I am still surprised that no one of the hardware producers is aware of this.

Daqri Smart Glasses

The smart glasses from DAQRI come with a belt pack that contains the battery as well as the processing unit. The battery should last about four hours, depending on what you are doing. Interestingly, the battery can be changed and a battery pack can be connected while the glasses are still in use. This is not possible with the Hololens. The belt pack is connected to the glasses via cable and weighs 425g. In comparison, the Hololens and ODG R9 are stand-alone devices, the Meta 2 is tethered to a computer.

The doors are open for DAQRI

Overall, if DAQRI solves the tracking issues, adds more options to control the device, like hand gestures or eye-tracking, and lowers the development kit price of $4.950, there is a big chance to be an important player in the Augmented Reality enterprise market. In order to reach that, DAQRI has to prove that they’re able to produce and ship the smart glasses. But they are not alone here: the ODG R9s are not available yet, Meta delivered a few devices but has a huge order list to work off. All of these players should do their homework before Magic Leap enters the market at the end of the year. Lets see who uses the time wisely.

These days, most of the news around Augmented Reality are about Apple and its new ARKit — a development tool to place digital objects into real scenery and display it on iPhones and iPads. Still in its beta version, ARKit has started a second wave of public awareness for AR after the most successful mobile game in history: Pokémon Go. With the consumer market now finally entering the AR world, it is little known that the enterprise sector has already been using the new technology for many years — often in stealth mode with prototypes and proof of concepts as internal apps. This is about to change completely.

In this article, I want to share some thoughts about how “consumer first” announcements like the ARKit influence the enterprise business. You may think that apps like Pokémon Go and all the examples developed by nerds around the globe with the ARKit don’t have anything to do with the business sector. The same applies to Snap’s Spectacles — AR glasses that look like hipster sunglasses — or Pokémon Go, another mobile game with some hype for AR. Believe it or not: you’ll see all of this repeated in some form or another in the enterprise sector.

I’m not talking about single use-case scenarios, I’m talking about how the tools from Apple as well as the AR activities from Facebook, Google and Snap inspire us to rethink the use of AR. These are the opportunities that make better enterprise applications and adapt the technology to the user — instead of educating the user to adapt to the technology.

ARKit brings Augmented Reality to millions of users and developers

Mapping our world with the smartphone camera and using tracking methods, like SLAM, to place virtual objects into real scenery — in a nutshell… this is exactly what the ARKit does. The more realistic the objects look, the better they merge with the real environment. Once our brain perceives the virtual content like physical objects we reach the full potential of an augmented or extended reality. Therefore the size of the objects has to fit to the environment and the objects have to react to different light conditions — just to mention two important factors.

One of Apple’s first applications on iOS is in development with IKEA. It allows IKEA app users place furniture and accessories straight out of the catalogue directly into your living room using Augmented Reality. Apple’s camera and software technology supports what I described before: it identifies the room size and light conditions to scale the furniture to the right size and texture. Imagine this for planning stores, supermarkets, hotels and real estate. This powerful software is giving almost anyone the possibility to create AR applications and will have a huge impact: from September on — with the release of iOS 11 — there will be millions of new AR users and developers building apps.

In the first step, we’ll see a bunch of different apps. Once the developers understand the way AR works and what the possibilities are, there will be more and more daily-use applications. It was the same with the first mobile apps — it took some time to reach the full potential. We will be able to create better and more natural user interfaces and get closer to the point where we use AR in daily business. Instead of simply placing furniture in our living room, we will be able to visualize operational knowledge in the real work environment. What would you say if I told you that there is no difference between Pokémon Go and a maintenance application for a technician? Both applications embed digital objects or information in the real world.

Yes, for enterprise AR you will need more precise object recognition and model-based tracking, but sometimes simple is also better. Showing instructions, tasks and information on real products and parts is something we already do, but with the awareness through Apple’s ARKit and the fact that many people will get in touch with AR in private areas, they want to have it for their work. Another example you can compare with are smartphones. When I bought my first iPhone in 2007, at work we were still using Motorola or Nokia mobiles. I saw the potential of using the iPhone at work and tried everything to integrate it.

“Consumer First” will bring Augmented Reality to daily use

Another huge advantage for Apple as they have their own ecosystem that encourages users to integrate the latest Apple products. This is important to consider when looking at the enterprise sector. The industry always requires an integration of content tools that fit to their existing infrastructure and can re-use current data. New systems that don’t work with the old will simply never be considered. As mentioned at the beginning of the article: it’s not so much about single use cases, it’s about the impact of Apple & Co. on Enterprise AR with consumer releases and products. Here are the five reasons why I see the impact from Apple & Co. at a glance:

  1. Apple brings AR to millions of users on existing iPhones and iPads
  2. The new iPhone 8 will enable more AR functionalities with 3D sensors
  3. The ARKit enables millions of developers to create apps for iOS users
  4. AR will be affordable in terms of hardware and content creation
  5. Enterprises will understand the possibilities of AR through new apps

Today, we’re thinking about how we can use AR, in ten years we’ll find it difficult to imagine how we could ever lived without it — like with the iPhone. This is the real change that we see now with the ARKit. In the last five years I have seen the development of Augmented Reality with my work at RE’FLEKT and now with ARKit — and not to forget the Hololens — it is the first time that we can see the daily use of AR coming closer. Also Facebook, Google, Snap and other consumer tech will have a strong impact on the enterprise market. I will cover things like Facebook’s camera effects platform and Google Lens in separate posts.

Apple bought an eye-tracking company. Many other AR glasses manufacturers will use eye-tracking as it is one of the most natural gestures for us humans.
