Superheros and virtual reality (VR) seem to fit together perfectly. Unlike traditional videogames, VR allows players to actually feel the experience of becoming a superhero opposed to simply watching as the action unfolds. Developers have already taken note of this, with a huge selection of superhero action videogames already available in VR.
Beginning back in 2015 with the announcement of the original Samsung Gear VR, Marvel dipped their toes in the VR waters with Battle for Avengers Tower. This has since been followed-up with Marvel Avengers: Tony Stark’s Lab and the forthcoming Oculus Rift exclusive, MARVEL Powers United VR. DC Comics is also jumping on the bandwagon with the recently announced Justice League VR: The Complete Experience, set for release later this year. But what superhero VR experiences are available right now? Check out VRFocus’ top picks below.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man: Homecoming’s VR experience was a movie tie-in in the most obvious possible context. Available to download for free on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, Spider-Man: Homecoming cast the player as the webbed wonder himself. A short-lived but enjoyable experience, players can shoot their web at various targets and manipulate objects with the available motion-controllers.
Batman: Arkham VR
The first true superhero experience to come to high-end VR platforms, Batman: Arkham VR debuted as a PlayStation VR exclusive before jumping to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift earlier this year. Batman: Arkham VR is a mixed experience; at one end, you do feel like the caped crusader, but at the other you don’t get to engage in any of the action-orientated adventures that you might wish for. Batman: Arkham VR is very much targeting the ‘world’s greatest detective’ angle opposed to the badass Batman many might be hoping for.
Megaton Rainfall
Conversely to Batman: Arkham VR, Megaton Rainfall specifically targets the action aspect of superheroing. A little bit of a cheat being included here as Megaton Rainfall is actually set to release in the near future and not available immediately, its still worthy of inclusion due to the hugely compelling experience of flying around the planet and engaging alien forces in a race to save cities on a grand scale. Megaton Rainfall will launch for PlayStation VR very soon, and is definitely one to keep on your watch list.
Kamen Rider
While the VR experience based on Kamen Rider (known as Masked Rider internationally) is only currently available on PlayStation VR in Japan, it’s an experience worth visiting for any fan of the franchise. The current incarnation of Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, began in 2016 and tells the tale of an evil computer virus corporation, with a videogame company being responsible for creating the devices that allow the hero to transform into Kamen Rider. Kamen Rider Ex-Aid: True Ending is the VR movie spin-off and was filmed with a 360-degree camera, and is available to download for PlayStation VR now.
