Community Download: What Makes A Good VR Horror Game?

Welcome back to the Community Download, our weekly series that lets you, our members of the UploadVR Community, voice your opinion on a wide range of topics! Last time we asked our wonderful readership which VR games they find themselves continuously playing more than just once or twice. Which games really keep people coming back for more? Now this week we’re going to once again focus on games, but notably those with a more sinister theme. We’re talking about VR horror games.

When a player puts on a VR headset they’re surrendering themselves to the deep, dark, immersive bonds of cyberspace. Wearing an HMD like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or PlayStation VR (PSVR) can really make you feel more vulnerable than usual and if you combine that with the visceral and atmospheric qualities that horror games are known for, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. But what’s the secret formula to tapping into that suffocating feeling of dread and terror that only VR horror titles can capture?

That’s our topic for this week: What makes a good VR horror game?

Over the last year and a half we’ve reviewed dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of VR games here at UploadVR and many of them have been horror games. Some of the very best VR games period are horror titles with the likes of Resident Evil 7, A Chair in a Room: Greenwater, The Brookhaven Experiment, Arizona Sunshine, Killing Floor: Incursion, and more all scratching that terrifying itch. But how do developers encapsulate that theme? How do they achieve the lofty goal of scaring players?

Let us know what you think down in the comments below what you think is necessary to make a good VR horror game!
