Oculus has begun rolling out its next update for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), version 1.18, with its main feature being a Demo Mode as well as further improvement to mixed reality (MR) capture.
The new Demo Mode has been designed to allow users to set up their Oculus library to showcase their own curated selection of apps. So if they’re letting friends try virtual reality (VR) for the first time, rather than guiding them through a big content list users can build their own guided tour so mates can see what’s best to play first.
The other benefit of Demo Mode is for studio’s at trade shows and events. The principle works the same, but if a developer has created several VR titles for Oculus Rift then only those can be shown if desired.
In the June 1.16 update Oculus added native MR capture to the software, enabling developers as well as players to create their own immersive videos. Now with 1.18, further improvements to the MR calibration tool including support for stereo cameras has been included. Plus there’s the usual performance improvements, stability enhancements, and bug fixes.
This summer has seen a massive drive by Oculus to improve its customer base, with the summer sale reducing the HMD to $399 USD including the Oculus Touch controllers. That offer has now ended, but the headset is still cheaper than earlier this year, with a new standard price of $499.
VRFocus will continue its coverage of Oculus Rift, reporting back with the latest announcements.
