The global leader in Pervasive Engineering Simulation, ANSYS, has completed its acquisition of optical simulation leadr OPTIS. This means that the company is now thje industry leading solution provider for autonomous vehicle simulation, able to leverage OPTIS’s photo-realistic virtual reality (VR) technology for its solutions.
OPTIS, the leading provider of software for scientific simulation of light, human vision and physics-based visualization, will add to ANSYS’ capabilities by allowing them to simulation of all the sensors, including lidar, cameras and radar. These excels their multiphysics simulation of physical and electronic components; the analysis of systems functional safety; as well as the automated development of safety-certified embedded software to new levels. The functionality can be integrated into closed-loop simulation environments that interact with weather and traffic simulations, allowing for thousands of driving scenarios to be executed within virtual space.
“More than 90 percent of automotive accidents are caused by human error, and autonomous vehicles have the potential to virtually eliminate accidents,” said Eric Bantegnie, vice president and general manager, ANSYS. “By providing the most accurate and comprehensive multidisciplinary and cross-functional simulation technology on the market, ANSYS – along with OPTIS technology – will help bring safe, reliable autonomous vehicles to market sooner, reducing automotive accidents and deaths.”
Thanks to the developments that OPTIS made with their photo-realistic VR and closed-loop simulation platform, the development speed of autonomous vehicles can be increased greatly. The VR backbone – combined with other ANSYS solutions – enables automotive manufactures a chance to simulate the environment driverless vehicles are navigating, including road conditions, weather and one-way streets. The applications of these solutions can be beyond autonomous vehicles, allowing for vision-integrated tools with ANSYS’ existing solutions with potential to transform their current customer offerings.
“As the industry races to develop safe autonomous vehicles, a comprehensive sensor solution is critical to autonomous vehicle development,” said Jacques Delacour, OPTIS president and CEO. “Joining ANSYS enables us to provide the best radar, lidar and camera simulation in the market within one toolset. Together we will significantly speed the development of autonomous vehicles.”
The autonomous vehicle sector is predicted to boost the global economy by $7 trillion (USD) in the coming years. With an impact on human life more noticeable with the potential to reduce traffic accidents, which in turn could save upwards of 600,000 lives yearly. As this emerging technology continues to develop rapidly and look to make use of VR technology to help with development and simulations. It is only a matter of time before this sector becomes a booming area that is helping to advance VR as well.
