Those fortunate enough to be attending the Facebook Developer Conference, also known as F8, will be awaiting news on what Facebook has planned for the next year. One of the announcements widely expected is the release date for Oculus Go.
Lucky attendees will be able to bag their very own Oculus Go device, as Facebook are giving away one Oculus Go to every valid badge holder at the event tomorrow.
The Oculus Go is a standalone headset that won’t need a smartphone or PC rig to power it. It is designed to occupy the middle tier in-between the high-end Oculus Rift and the Oculus-powered mobile VR offered by the Samsung Gear VR.
The Oculus Go was first announced at Oculus Connect 4 in October 2017 and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip, with a 2560 x 1440 LCD display, a 3DoF controller and integrated spacial audio.
Unlike its expected rivals, the Lenovo Mirage Solo and HTC Vive Focus, the Oculus Go doesn’t have inside-out tracking capability, so content on the platform will need to be seated, meaning the Oculus Go might be at a disadvantage compared to its fellow standalone VR devices, however, the Oculus Go .
One of the expected announcements at F8 is the reveal of when the Oculus Go will be making it to market. The device was available for pre-order from Amazon US, priced at $199 (USD), though it appears to have been subsequently removed.
The Facebook F8 conference is taking place from 1st-2nd May, 2018 at San Jose in California. Attendees who want to get hold of their free Oculus Go will need to present themselves at the registration desk at 2pm on 2nd May with a valid badge in order to get hold of the device, which is limited to one per person.
