I Am A Man, The VR Experience About The Civil Rights Struggle Is Out Now

A new virtual reality (VR) experience has released for Oculus that gives users a chance to experience a part of history in a fully immersive way. I Am A Man gives viewers an insight into the personal struggles or marginalized people, allowing them to walk in the shoes of people who fought for freedom and equality during the civil rights era.

I Am A Man: VR Experience

I Am A Man is created by Derek A. Ham and is set during the events of the African-American Civil Rights Movement, exploring the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike and the events leading up to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The project is designed to give a deeper awareness of their struggle, using historical film and photographs, along with voice narration of actual Civil Rights participants to ensure a rich, educational experience.

As a sanitation worker, users will be at the heart of the struggle for equality as they progress through the experience and uncover more of the historical events. From those that started the movement to the events that would unfold from it, all of the important details are included and delivered in an immersive experience like no other.

I Am A Man: VR Experience

The project was one of the 14 VR projects selected for the 2017 Oculus Launch Pad Scholarship project totaling $620,000 (USD). Since then, Derek A. Ham has worked hard to continue the development of the title ensuring the most realistic and detailed experience for viewers.

The I Am A Man is also planned to be installed in the National Civil Rights Museum, which was established in 1991 and is located at the former Lorraine Motel, where civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968. The release of The I Am A Man has coincided with the 50th anniversary of this event and therefore, is a fitting way for people to explore the history of the event.

I Am A Man is available now on the Oculus store for free, requiring the use of Oculus Touch.

VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on I Am A Man and the work of Derek A. Ham in future, so stay tuned for more.
