Oculus Go’s Release Date has Been Confirmed

Facebook’s annual F8 conference has begun today with the company diving straight in with a big keynote address. With immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) expected to feature prominently the main news most have been waiting for is the release date of Oculus Go, the new standalone headset, and that date has now been confirmed.

Oculus Go GDC Promo 03

Oculus Go made its first appearance during Oculus Connect 4 (OC4) last year, with the company detailing a $199 USD starting price whilst touting a Spring 2018 launch. Since then, Oculus Go went on to make its first publice debut during the Gamer Developers Conference (GDC) 2018 in San Francisco during March, demoing titles like VR boardgame Catan VR, sci-fi shooter Anshar Onlineand Coatsink’s mini-game compendium They Suspect Nothing.

As you’re probably aware by now, Oculus Go differs from Oculus’ other headsets, the Gear VR and Oculus Rift, by offering a complete all-in-one solution. It essentially has a smartphone built in, as the processing power comes from a  Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip, designed to offer a neat entry level solution to VR adoption, sitting between the two other head-mounted displays in terms of price.

Featuring a three degrees of freedom (3DoF) controller, the headset has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 via a new LCD display,  integrated spatial audio and adjustable headstraps.

Oculus Go will see a worldwide release today, with 1000 apps available and sold through its own website and usual retail partners. VRFocus reported earlier today that Amazon US had already begun pre-orders for the HMD, listing a place holder release date prior to the new announcement. As F8 continues into tomorrow, VRFocus will bring you all the latest news and updates from the event.
