The Annie Awards Puts Out Call for Entries

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood has announced its ‘Call for entries’ for the 46th Annual Annie Awards. The aim of the awards is to honour excellence in the field of animation, and among the production categories is the award for Best Virtual Reality.

For this year’s awards, the organisers are making an effort to open up the awards to more independent productions. With virtual reality (VR) being regarded as something of a haven for indie creators, this presents an opportunity for them.

Any ASIFA-Hollywood member can submit one short subject for free, and the Annie Awards are also teaming up with major animation festivals to provide free submissions to grand prize recipients.

The Annie Award for Best Virtual Reality Production is described on the website as: ‘An Annie Award for Best Virtual Reality (VR) Production shall be awarded in recognition of creative excellence in the art of animation’.

The submission requirements for VR projects are that it must have originally appeared in any venue (theatrical, broadcast internet, mobile device, etc.) anywhere in the world between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018. The project will need to be either released to the public, screened for ASIFA-Hollywood membership or a submission of required materials will need to be sent to the nominating committee.

A project submitted to the Best Virtual Reality Production category will need a complete VR version. ASIFA-Hollywood will supply a VR experience location for registered voters who don’t have access to a VR rig, but who wish to get the full experience prior to voting, in order to enable a fair vote.

Further information on the Best Virtual Reality Production category, along with submission rules and other information can be found on the Annie Awards website. Submissions will close on Thursday, 1st November, 2018 at 5pm PST.

The Annie Awards Ceremony will be held on 2nd February, 2019. for future coverage on awards for achievement in VR, keep checking back with VRFocus.
