It seems that everyone is getting into the spirit of the spooky season, with a range of updates and new releases that bring the scares to virtual reality (VR). Another title that is enjoying the season of fright is Pixel Ripped 1989, which is bringing a brand-new Nightmare Bonus Level to the retro-themed VR adventure.
The Halloween update is available on Steam and the Oculus Store, with plans for it to soon release on PlayStation VR. There will also be special discounts available for players who have not yet experienced Pixel Ripped 1989.
The Oculus Rift version is already 20% off, and the Steam version will be getting the same discount as of 1st November, 2018. In addition, players who manage to beat the Nightmare Bonus Level will also win a special Gear Kid skin within the game.
Pixel Ripped 1989 is a VR title very much inspired by the 8-bit videogames of the 1980s and early 1990s. The premise is that of a ‘game within a game’ in which the player is a girl called Nicola who is obsessed with videogames. She needs to use her faithful hand-held ‘Gear Kid’ console to beat the evil Cyblin Lord who has discovered a means to invade the real world.
The title got high marks when it was reviewed by the VRFocus team, saying: “don’t be fooled into thinking Pixel Ripped 1989 is a walk in the park, which you’ll whizz through in no time. You could possibly complete the entire title in around two hours with enough practice, however it’s likely to take you a least double that the first time around. Remember how difficult some late 80s, and 90s platformers were, sometimes requiring intense repetition to get right, well Pixel Ripped 1989 has that nice little aspect the further you get through it.”
