Half-Life: Alyx Secures Best VR/AR Title at The Game Awards

Half-Life: Alyx

The annual Game Awards created by Geoff Keighley has become the biggest event in the industry calendar, celebrating the best videogames of the past year. Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) content has been included since 2017 and last night’s event was no different, with several VR compatible titles walking away with awards.

No Man's Sky Origins

When it came to the Best VR/AR Game category there were several strong contenders but inevitably its was Valve’s stellar sci-fi adventure Half-Life: Alyx which walked away with the prize.

Normally that would be the end of it for immersive content, but with more titles adding VR compatibility several others also made the grade. When it came to the Best Ongoing category which featured the likes of Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, it was Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky which was successful. It was the launch of the ‘Beyond’ update in 2019 which added PC VR support to the experience.

Over in the Best Sim/Strategy category, Asobo Studio’s Microsoft Flight Simulator was the winner. While the impressive flight simulator currently supports the HP Reverb G2, the studio recently announced that all PC VR headsets would be compatible before the end of this month.

Lastly, in the Best Debut Game category four-player, psychological horror Phasmophobia took the top spot. Still in Early Access, its become a runaway hit since its release in September, where players become paranormal investigators exploring haunted locations. Both PC and VR players can team up to gather evidence.

There weren’t any surprise VR announcements during the event but Cyan did pop up to reveal that customers buying its VR reworking of Myst for Oculus Quest would get a Myst themed Oculus Home environment.

With The Game Awards now over don’t forget that voting in the VRFocus Awards is still open until Monday, 14th December. For the latest VR/AR news, keep reading VRFocus.
