Oculus Quest’s monthly update is now on the way, rolling out several new features to make multiplayer gaming more seamless, fine-tuning Messenger and improving the headset’s security – if it is used by several people.
In a new blog posting today, Oculus outlines a new “Invite to App” button which will be appearing in select titles (Beat Saber, Blaston, Demeo, Echo VR, ForeVR Bowl, Hyper Dash, PokerStars VR, and Topgolf with Pro Putt). When you’re in one of these videogames you’ll find the button inside the universal menu, providing an option to send a pop-up invite notification to a friend, someone you recently played with or an in-game player. Accepting will whisk the invitee straight into a multiplayer session.
While the titles mentioned will be the first to implement the feature, it’ll be open to all developers once the v31 update has rolled out. Additionally, Oculus’ mobile app will allow you to set up sessions before heading into VR by generating a custom Invite Link which can then be shared.
The other major addition in this update has to do with security. A new Security Settings panel will allow you to set or reset an unlock pattern both in VR and on the app which can then be used to log into the headset or access saved passwords. Tired of typing in passwords? The Oculus Browser will allow you to save and autofill your passwords.
Messenger is also getting some small improvements. Send and Read Receipts will be available to track conversations and Reactions will allow you to respond with a quick emoji rather than having to type.
On his profile page, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg happened to mention another interesting feature aimed directly at developers, access to Passthrough API Experimental. This would then allow creators to “build and test mixed reality experiences” he notes.
