It’s not often that an original, 2016 launch title for Oculus Rift gets brought back to life but that’s exactly what Playful Corp has done today, remastering the iconic Lucky’s Tale for the modern Oculus Quest 2 audience.
Lucky’s Tale was quite literally one of the very first virtual reality (VR) videogames to showcase how well 3rd-person platforming could work in a VR headset, way before the likes of Astro Bot Rescue Mission or Moss. For this release on Oculus Quest 2, the studio has completely gone over the original, updating the lighting, rendering and remixing the audio to improve the whole experience.
That’s not all the Oculus Quest 2 remaster will offer, the team has refined Lucky’s movement so it should be even easier making all those platforms to platform leaps. Plus, a new character model from Lucky’s latest adventure, New Super Lucky’s Tale has been dropped in.
As mentioned, Lucky’s Tale is a super cute platformer starring titular hero Lucky Swifttail who is on a quest to save his best friend Piggy from the monstrously tentacled Glorp. That’s about it storywise, the rest is all about running, jumping and climbing your way through a colourful landscape filled with hidden treasures to locate and angry enemies to deal with.
As VRFocus said in its original 5-star review of Lucky’s Tale: “The titular fox’s moveset and control system is clearly borrowed from Super Mario 64, while the coloured coin hunt is reminiscent of Super Mario World‘s red coins…Is this an issue? Well, no. If you’re going to create a videogame that adheres strictly to established genre formulae, why not follow the example of the most celebrated examples? It’s familiar and comfortable.”
