April’s Steam Hardware Survey results are in, and the launch of the Vive Pro doesn’t seem to have knocked the Oculus Rift from its top spot.
Rift accounted for 47.53% of the total VR usage on Steam over the last month, which is slightly down from last month’s 48.92%. The Vive, meanwhile is up to 45.14% from last month’s 44.06%. The hardware survey doesn’t specifically list HTC’s newest headset, the Vive Pro, which launched at the beginning of the month. It’s likely (though unconfirmed) that the Pro is being counted under the existing Vive label, which would explain the slight jump in users.
If that’s true, then it does mean the $799 Vive Pro hasn’t managed to reclaim that top spot that Vive had held for so long. Given that that’s twice the price of the $399 Rift we can’t say we’re too surprised, especially when you consider that’s the price of just the headset alone and doesn’t include controllers and base stations, which take the cost well above $1,000. In fact, if you consider many people buying the Vive Pro will be replacing their original Vive with it, there’s even less reason to see a big jump.
Windows Mixed Reality headsets took up another 5.04% of the survey and, amazingly, the Rift’s second development kit (DK2), still hold 1.8% of the total VR usage.
As always, we’ll note that the survey is entirely optional and thus not a definitive picture of the current VR sales landscape.
